This was my first major project with Eric Majer (Eric Majer Architecte Inc). Our clients wanted to renovate a typical Montreal duplex (which had fallen in considerable disrepair) and turn it into a four-storey residence with a mezzanine and a roof terrace. The challenge was to hide the mezzanine from the street and minimize its negative impact on natural light in the backyard. We ended up tapering the mezzanine volume towards the back, where a large glazed staircase became the heart of the project. The front of the house had to adhere to the City’s strict standards on facade restoration, while the back provided an opportunity to create something more contemporary in line with our client’s desires. I oversaw many aspects of this project, from preliminary design to drafting, detailing, and site supervision.
